Snacking in the Golden Garden (& a Guinea Surprise!) | VLOG
Hey ya'll, I'm Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm
Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you'll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.
There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart - to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we've learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you're here.

I used to watch your videos as if it were an addiction. I value you and your opinion. I was diagnosed with lupus, hashimotos, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis. These last 2 years have been incredibly difficult for me. I gave up my chickens and quit gardening, but something called me to your page today. I don't know what it was as I don't even watch UA-cam much anymore, but I ended up on this video. It was the first video that I came to, and you spoke to me... I was ready to lie down and die bc I'm tired of the struggle and the pain. I've totally given up. My daughter planted a garden this year, and I picked a few green beans, and tomatoes are just now producing fruit. I grew a garden all these years until a couple of years ago my step grandfather passed and he a whole barn full of busted hay bails that I raked up and put on my garden and everything that grew in there died. Nothing thrived, and finally, this year, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. My point is, you gave me the fire to not lie down and die. I am only 49 so maybe I can turn this around..maybe..it isn't going to be easy but maybe I can do it. Thank you for being an inspiration

Can't wait to finally meet you and to be at the modern homestead fest to be with like minded people. It's gonna be amazing! We make pizza with diced eggplant, zucchini, basil, mushrooms, onion, and spinach. Fry it all together and top a premade crust, cook to melt the cheese. It is amazing! Sometimes we mix in barbecue chicken chunks.

I know you experienced some desert when you traveled through Nevada, but I wish you had time to drop into Arizona this time of year and feel the Sonoran Desert. Today's forecast for Phoenix is 114° - last year we spent the ENTIRE MONTH OF JULY with daily highs above 115°. Grass got crunchy and trees were struggling. Above 115° is such a different heat than in the south, truly like that from an oven, and we only drop down to the 90's at night. Yes, a challenge to growing, but we're adapting and learning. We haven't had a frost for about three years, so I guess you could call this our reverse winter! We were here to feel the 122° day - that was pretty breathtaking, planes couldn't fly because the air was too thin. Maybe sometime you can come and experience what real heat requires, too? A unique environment, for sure!

IN CASE you are unaware: Boric Acid(a natural mineral--Not acid acid) is VERY VERY VERY beneficial for eye infections. I tell people that and they run--it truly works better than any medication. Don't put powder directly in the eye. Dissolve an 1/8-1/4 tsp in 1/2 c. hot water, cool, then flush eye. 80ish yr old lady taught me that over 25yrs ago. Usually takes 1, maybe 2 flushes..... and GONE. 🥰🥰

The only easy way that I have found to tell my male and female guineas apart are there cheek flaps. The males have really big cups and the females have more of a flap that covers their cheek. When you have a big flock it's nearly impossible to listen and hear the difference in their calls and then the minute you think okay that's a female because of her call then she scatters and she's in the middle of 13 guineas... so I just look at their faces and I can count the big cups. At night you can count them up real quick.
